City of Peru Public Services Committee met April 14

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

ROLL CALL: Aldermen Edgcomb, Payton, Tieman, and O’Sadnick present.

MINUTES

Alderman Payton made a motion to approve the Public Services Committee Minutes of March 31, 2025. Alderman Tieman seconded the motion; motion carried.

Alderman Tieman made a motion to approve the Closed Session Minutes of April 24, 2023, October 2, 2023, February 19, 2024, and September 30, 2024. Alderman Payton seconded the motion; motion carried.

CODE ENFORCEMENT

None

POLICE

Alderman Edgcomb reviewed the request for a part-time social worker who would work 20 hours a week and be responsive to all first responders. Alderman Payton asked Polcie Chief Sarah Raymond about confirmation of hours. Alderman Lukosus inquired about the wage rate ($42.00). Alderman Moreno asked about special circumstances with extra hours. Alderman Edgcomb noted there are still a lot of questions. PSM/Fire Chief Jeff King advocated and acknowledged the value of having a social worker. Human Resources Director Kim Reese noted our EAP program and specifics to first responders.

FIRE

PSM/Fire Chief King initiated a discussion on seeking specifications on a new fire truck engine and noted the 4 year lead time.

PARKS & RECREATION

Adam Thorson, Director of Parks, Recreation and Special Events reported on the following:

• AX Church asked for projects they can do within the city and asked for recommendations

○ Suggested rehabbing the horseshoe pits and bags at Centennial Park

• Reminded committee of the May 1st and 2nd baseball tournament at Veterans Park

○ Grand Valley University & Upper Iowa University

Alderman Edgcomb commended Mr. Thorson on the great turnout for the easter egg event and that Mr. Thorson is always trying to come up with new approaches.

NEW BUSINESS

Alderman O’Sadnick expressed his concerns regarding electric bikes and scooters and asked about policing policies. Corporate Counsel Scott Schweickert noted the visibility and condition of May Road and jurisdiction and also noted the use so of bikes on the shared use path.

Alderman Payton made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Alderman Tieman seconded the motion; motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 5:17 p.m.
