Thanks to the efforts of state Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris), a brand-new Route 89 bridge spanning the Illinois River and connecting Bureau and Putnam counties will be named the Illinois Valley Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Rezin introduced legislation as House Joint Resolution (HJR) 142, and the Illinois Senate passed the measure on Dec. 1. The span’s new moniker honors Illinois veterans of combat. Rezin, who represents the 38th District, said signs will be made and erected after the bridge construction is completed.

“The Spring Valley VFW was instrumental in this idea,” Rezin said. “I want to thank them for bringing it to me and their continuous work in honoring and helping Illinois veterans every day. Also, thank you to all our veterans for their service and sacrifice. We are forever indebted to your commitment to everything you have done for our great nation.”

Praising ex-military constituents across the Land of Lincoln, Rezin reminded the public that those who committed themselves to protecting the U.S. merit admiration and respect for safeguarding freedom.

"While we can never do enough for these brave men and women, naming this bridge is a small gesture of our gratitude for their selfless service and sacrifice," Rezin said in a statement. "Now, future generations, every time they use this bridge, will remember our veterans and the sacrifices they endured.”
