Ottawa Township High School District No. 140 Board of Education met Monday, Jan. 23.

BOARD OF EDUCATION

REGULAR MEETING

UDITORIUM JANUARY 23, 2017 6:30 P.M.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL: Board President Timothy J. Creedon III called the regular meeting of the Ottawa Township High School District 140 Board of Education at 6:30 p.m. on January 23, 2017. Members present: Timothy Creedon, Gene Duffy, Donald Harris, David Keely, Andree-Marie Koban, John Levy, and George Shanley.

OTHERS PRESENT: Michael Cushing, Patrick Leonard, Jeff DeWalt, Janet Pearson, Kelly Schmitt, OTHSEA representative Wendy Sheridan, and representatives from the media.

MINUTES: Motion made by Duffy, seconded by Levy to accept and approve the minutes from the regular meeting on December 12, 2016 as submitted. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

Motion made by Levy, seconded by Harris to accept and approve the minutes from the special meeting on January 5, 2017 as submitted. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

RECOMMENDATION FOR REVIEW OF CLOSED SESSION MINUTES: Motion made by Harris, seconded by Creedon to keep the following closed session meeting minutes closed: July 18, August 15 and 30, September 19, October 6 and 17, November 14, and December 12, 2016 as per the review committee of Don Harris and Tim Creedon. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

BILLS/PAYROLL: Motion made by Harris, seconded by Levy to approve the district treasurer's report, financial statements, bills and payroll for December 2016. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

AUDIENCE TO VISITORS: Karen Fisher, past president of the Illinois Association of School Boards, spoke about the Alliance Leadership Summit scheduled for Feb. 21 and 22 in Springfield.

OTHSEA: Nothing to report.

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS

SUPERINTENDENT: The Ottawa Township High School and Ottawa Elementary band and choir students will be performing in Kingman Gym at the annual OEHS Music Fest on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to hear the talent of Ottawa's finest student musicians.

As mentioned at the regular board meeting in December, the OTHS Educational Foundation announced that funding is now available for their Educational Grant Program. Grant applications are due February 9, 2017 and recipients will be announced in March of 2017.

The 11th Annual Hall of Fame dinner and banduet will be held in our cafeteria and auditorium on Saturday, February 4th, with a social at 6pm and dinner at 6:30pm. Hall of Fame inductees will also be honored at our home basketball game vs. L-P High School on the 3rd. Congratulations to this year's inductees: Earl T. Gerding (Class of 1938), William Myers (former OTHS faculty member), Christine L. Sipula (Class of 1971), Dr. Philip Roth (Class of 1988), Ryan Nevins (Class of 1996), the 1967-68 Varsity Cross Country Team and the 1995-96 Varsity Football Team.

As mentioned in this month's facility report, given the current condition of the tennis courts we will need to resurface the courts this spring. The resurfacing of the tennis Courts will be scheduled this spring and during fiscal year 2018 we will need to resurface the track. Both of these items will be paid out of the capital projects fund (60) and are part of the ongoing maintenance that needs to be completed to ensure that our facilities are fully operational.

A reminder that next month's Board meeting will be held on Monday, February 13, 2017 due to President's Day on February 20, 2017.

PRINCIPAL: The 8th Grade Open House that took place on January 11, 2017 was well attended by future OTHS students and their families. A special thank you to Matt Gross, OTHS Freshman Academy Coordinator, for his help in the organization of this activity.

Registration for the 2017-18 school year is well underway. On November 7, 2016, counselors began the process of registering our current 9, 10", and 11th graders. The counselors will begin visiting feeder schools on the week of February 6th and will conclude the registration of current 8" graders on Friday, February 17, 2017. If any parents or guardians have any questions about the registration process they should contact their child's counselor as soon as possible.

PERSONNEL:

TERMINATION: Motion made by Levy, seconded by Harris to approve the termination of Ms. Michelle Fowler, hall monitor effective January 6, 2017 with permission to post. On roll call all members present voted yea, Motion carried.

FRESHMANSOFTBALL COACH: Motion made by Shanley, seconded by Duffy to approve Mr. Eric Buscher as the freshman softball coach for the 2017 season. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

RESIGNATION FRESHMAN BASEBALL COACH: Motion made by Duffy, seconded by Shanley to accept the resignation of Mr. Eric Buscher as the freshman softball coach with permission to post. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

MATERNITY LEAVE REQUEST: Motion made by Koban, seconded by Harris, to approve the maternity leave of Ms. Kathryn Martin, main office secretary, tentatively beginning on March 25, 2017, and returning on June 5, 2017. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

NEW BUSINESS:

RESOLUTION TO REGULATE EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENTS: Motion made by Shanley, seconded by Koban to adopt the Resolution to Regulate Expense Reimbursements based on the new policies that were approved in December. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

2017-18 CALENDAR: Motion made by Levy, seconded by Duffy to approve the proposed calendar for the 2017-18 school year. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

CLOSED SESSION: Motion made by Creedon, seconded by Shanley, to enter into closed session at 6:51 p.m. to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal Counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity, negotiations, and student discipline - with action to be taken. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

RETURN TO OPEN SESSION: Board President Creedon returned the board to open session at 7:37 p.m. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

STUDENT PLACEMENT FOR STUDENT #2016-17-07: Motion made by Creedon, seconded by Harris that student #2016-17-07 be placed at the ROE Safe School for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year and the entire 2017-18 school year. On roll call all members present voted yea. Motion carried.

ADJOURN: There being no further business, President Creedon adjourned the meeting at 7:39 p.m.
