As a state representative, Frank Mautino spent $250,000 on repairs and gas for campaign vehicles that never existed, his campaign treasurer told a criminal grand jury, according to a citizens oversight group.
Patricia Maunu, Mautino’s campaign treasurer before he became Illinois auditor general, testified in relation to charges of campaign finance impropriety against Mautino.
According to the Edgar County Watchdog’s analysis of Maunu’s deposition, Mautino’s campaign did not own any campaign vehicles, despite repair and gas bills totaling more than $247,000 over 16 years.
The ECW said the campaign also wrote numerous checks to Spring Valley Bank, which Maunu’s deposition reveals was a method for the campaign to get cash for expenses – but the expenses are not supported by documentation like receipts or, in most cases, even a note on the checks’ memo lines.
The charges against Mautino followed an investigation into his continuing to collect campaign funding after being appointed to auditor general.
