Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) agricultural students have the opportunity to earn $4,500 scholarships thanks to the generosity of Barbara Davis, who recently established the Davis Family Agriculture Scholarship, according to a release from IVCC.

The scholarships will awarded for the first time this fall, with one female and one male student selected for the first year. The students have the opportunity to renew the scholarship for their second year, so that by the fall 2018 semester there will be four recipients every year.

“With $9,000 going to each recipient, the Davis Family Scholarship will have a dramatic impact on each student’s ability to finance their education,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said in a statement. “It was a delight to meet an individual as kind, modest and generous as Barbara Davis. We hope she’s with our foundation family for many, many years.”

Davis created the scholarship in honor of her husband, Cleo, to whom she was married for 46 years and shared the common routines of growing up on family farms.

“I’m interested in farming yet,” Davis said, according to the press release. “The family farm was a good place to grow up and I would like to help other young people get education in agriculture. And today, there are a lot of other avenues they can take other than the family farm.”
