Seneca Township High School District 160 Board of Education Curriculum Committee met March 4.

A meeting of the Curriculum Committee was held on March 4, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order with the following members present: Marty Voiles, Principal, Jason Eltrevoog, Board Member/Parent, Rich Hamilton, Board Member/Parent, Shane Trager, Parent

I. Fall Semester 2019 - Final Exam incentive totals

Mr. Voiles discussed a document he presented pertaining to final exam exemption totals from semester one of the 2019-2020 school year. A copy of this document is attached with these notes. Mr. Voiles discussed the success this new exemption process had for SHS students and how this filtered out per grade level.

Mr. Voiles also reviewed the exemption criteria used to determine all exemptions. Mr. Voiles explained this procedure was the first year implemented for grades 9-11 and this will stay in place in the coming years. Mr. Voiles said this data will be tracked in future semesters including spring results from semester two of the same school year.

II. Seneca High School Incentive Program

Mr. Voiles summarized the beginning stages that have been constructed to a comprehensive incentive program that for all students at SHS. This new initiative is still a work in progress and will require a phased implementation rollout over the next several school years. Mr. Voiles explained that an incentive program had "tossed about" recently, but after the success of the final exam incentives, people in various parts of our school started discussing the possibility of creating something on a larger level. Mr. Voiles explained that many steps are being considered and some of the specifics have yet to be determined, but staff and students are weighing various ideas and considerations in an attempt to help the administration determine what the overall plan will eventually look like. Mr. Voiles explained that a more thorough update will be provided at the fall 2020 curriculum meeting.

III. New courses for 2020-2021 school year

Mr. Voiles reviewed the four new courses that will be implemented during the 2020-2021 school year. The following courses will be added to the curriculum offerings:

1. AP Human Geography - year long course. pre-requisit e of recommendations, placement score or approval of Social Science department.

2. Intro to Nutrition - IVCC Dual Credit course (3 credit hours) pre-requisite of grade 12 students only, plus BNAT Training (or concurrent) This course will be taught entirely online with an IVCC instructor.

3. Percussion -year long course.pre-requisite of at least two years of junior high band, one year of high school choir or one semester of piano.

4. AP Computer Science -year long course.pre-requisite of Intro to Computer Science - Python and Algebra II. AP course geared toward 11-12 graders who are serious about programming and pursuing this field beyond high school.

IV. Title I/Student Supports

Mr. Voiles provided an update on the current status of our co-teaching assignments and the positive impact this approach is having for both our IEP students and regular education students. Mr. Voiles also discussed the possibility of searching for more professional development in the near future for our entire staff as to how co-teaching should be implemented and the role of both the special education teacher and the regular education classroom teacher.

Mr. Voiles also provided the committee with a brief update on the work being completed with Sherry St. Clair and how her work and review of the co-teaching is being viewed from her level of expertise.
