City of La Salle Streets, Alleys and Traffic Committee met June 15.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

Chairman Bacidore called the meeting to order at 6:16 p.m.

Present- Chairman Bacidore, Alderman Ptak, Alderman Reynolds, Alderman Lavieri, Alderman Jeppson Absent- Alderman Herndon, Alderman Crane

Others Present: Robert Bulak, City Clerk Carrie Brown, Deputy City Clerk Brent Bader

A quorum was present.

In regard to installing a stop sign northbound and southbound at the intersection of Crosat and 15th streets, Chairman Bacidore introduced Robert Bulak who brought the idea to the Committee. Bulak said he requested the stop sign to slow traffic down. He said drivers can travel from Eighth Street to O’Conor Street, almost a mile, without seeing a stop sign and he’s seen people pick up speed quickly. He’s lived on Crosat Street since 1968 and noticed most of the people living there are elderly over the last 10 to 15 years but he’s counted at least 13 children in the area of the 1500 block of Crosat Street to Roosevelt Street in recent years. He described the area as resembling a “racetrack” during peak hours of just before 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. He further stated that he hasn’t brought up the issue earlier because another resident had said they brought it up in the past but was told La Salle already has too many stop signs. He noted there is already four stop signs at 11th Street, 10th Street, Ninth Street, and Eighth Street and that having too many stops signs isn’t a good enough reason if one is truly needed in an area.

Alderman Jeppson asked Police Chief Robert Uranich if he has seen issues with speeding in the area. Uranich said he has not seen more issues than the other longer runs in the community the police keep an eye on. Alderman Lavieri asked Uranich if stop signs actually slow traffic or just regulate it. Uranich said he does believe stop signs slow traffic for those that obey the signs while some will just proceed through the intersection without stopping. Alderman Reynolds said residents mention Fourth and Crosat streets as requiring a stop sign but isn’t sure a stop sign at either location would fully solve the issue. Alderman Demes asked if Bulak lived in the area and Bulak confirmed he did live at 1545 Crosat Street. Demes suggested the stop sign will lead to more vehicle noises from vehicles accelerating out of the intersection and that should be considered if a stop sign is placed there. Alderman Ptak had no comments and Chairman Bacidore suggested it may not slow traffic down that much in the area. Bacidore said he expected to see more neighbors come to the meeting to ask for the sign and Bulak said the neighbor who lives across the street from him is also interested in a stop sign being placed there.

A vote was taken with Alderman Jeppson, Alderman Reynolds voting in favor of the sign and Alderman Lavieri, Alderman Ptak and Chairman Bacidore voting no.

Bacidore said the area has been without a stop sign for many years and with no accidents at the site he would rather leave it as it is. Bacidore said they can revisit the issue if more complaints arise.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
