Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s (R-16th) career may soon be cut short — not by former President Donald Trump's promise to support primary challengers to those who voted to impeach him — but because of Illinois’ remapping plans for its congressional districts.
David Wasserman, house editor of The Cook Political Report, posted a political map of Illinois on his Twitter page and said that there’s a good chance that Kinzinger’s district might be chopped up.
Wasserman explained that since the Democrats control the state House, Senate and the governor’s mansion they also get to control the remapping of the state.
According to his tweet, Wasserman says that the Democrats’ battle plan is to strengthen their base by protecting the 13 Democrat incumbents, beat Rep. Rodney Davis and eliminate one of the five downstate GOP seats.
He forecasts that since Kinzinger is likely to be beaten in the primary because the Republican Party has ostracized him after his vote to impeach Trump, the Democrats decided to chop up his district to garner more support for their party in those areas.
An insider in the Democratic Party spoke with Wasserman and said that losing Kinzinger is unfortunate. The insider said, “It’s too bad, because [Kinzinger is] the Republican we’d keep. But we can’t control their primaries.”
