An Illinois state senator is championing a co-sponsored bill that that would criminalize selling guns to felons.
Sen. Win Stoller has proposed the law that would make selling or giving a firearm to a convicted person a Class X felony that would be punishable with a 10- to 30-year prison sentence, according to the Illinois General Assembly.
Whether the bill will be welcomed with open arms remains to be seen as My Journal Courier has reported that Stoller and Sen. Jil Tracy, along with Neil Anderson, who also co-sponsored the bill recently, held a town hall meeting in Jacksonville hosted by state Sen. Steve McClure where the main topic of the evening was the Firearm Owners Identification card (FOID) requirements.
“I tried to renew my FOID card and I was on the phone for 1½ hours,” one participant said, according to the news site. “I shouldn’t have to reach out to my sheriff for assistance.”
Sen. Chapin Rose filed the new bill on Oct. 13 that safeguards that probation, periodic imprisonment or conditional discharge would not be applicable to individuals convicted of a crime, according to the Illinois General Assembly.
Furthermore, a period of probation, a term of periodic imprisonment, or conditional discharges will not be a criteria where the proposed law would punish a seller.
Senators Donald P. DeWitte, Terri Bryant and Jason Plummer are all co-sponsors of the bill.
