State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Sterling) attacked House Bill 5471 in a Facebook post published on Monday.
"As an Illinois State Senator, I take the responsibility to protect all citizens seriously and believe we should work together to find solutions that help keep people safe without infringing upon our constitutional rights," Rezin said. "However, I strongly believe that House Bill 5471 misses that mark. This proposal will create criminals out of law-abiding citizens instead of making the citizens of our state safer and does not take a wholesome approach to address gun violence."
Under HB 5471, the Protect Illinois Community Act, magazines with over 10 rounds are banned for long guns, while those with over 15 rounds are banned for handguns.
The National Rifle Association's (NRA) Institute for Legislative Action stated that Illinois citizens can only retain their banned magazines and gun parts if they register them with the state. The organization also urged Illinois residents to ask their local legislators to oppose HB 5471.
According to ABC7, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed HB 5471 into law on Tuesday, putting it into effect immediately. Assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and rapid-fire devices are now banned under the new law. WCMY reported that Rezin and Sen. Win Stoller (R-Peoria) voted against the bill.
