FOIA Request to Bureau County Election Division Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025. The Illinois Valley Times, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, has sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Bureau County Election Division in Illinois.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability in public institutions, we requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we sought an electronic format list of all candidates running for the upcoming election.
The information requested includes each candidate's first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; party affiliation; as well as their contact information - address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals due to our role in disseminating information.
